Are we born with dodgy genes, or is there something in the environment that makes some of us prone to be alcoholics? I used to be an alcoholic, and, after three years, I feel very confident about my recovery. However, other alcoholics in recovery do not share the same confidence. Why are some people safe to have a drink? Are other people 'born' alcoholics?
Please post, even if you're using a 'nom de plume'.

I'm not sure if there is a pre-existing condition or it's matter of how to deal with one's overwhelming life. It may begin quite innocently and then become part of a way to cope with something one doesn't want to cope with in their life. Until one becomes totally honest about living life on life's terms, there is no end in sight. I know several people who are now in their late 60's and are still functioning alcoholics. Although their lives are quite a mess and there still is no peace until they take that drink or smoke that joint, or pop that vicodin
